We have an exciting opportunity for a Power and Gas Shift Trader and Operator; based in the South East, for a young, dynamic and rapidly growing company which provides a route-to-market and asset optimisation service for all the generation assets within their Group. These currently include 250MW of diesel generation assets, and 170 MW of Gas-fired peaking plant which are optimised through the forward market, balancing mechanism, and ancillary service arrangements with National Grid. The group has an ambitious building plant program where this winter another 80MW of Gas plant will be delivered, with a further 250 MW build programme scheduled for the next couple of years. The total expansion program anticipates potentially building up to 2GW of gas fired peaking plant.

Our client has been very innovative in developing their sites and working closely with the engine manufactures, to ensure maximum flexibility. They also work very closely with National Grid to make sure that the services that are needed by National Grid are offered. As a result, they are leading the way with peaking plant in the Balancing Mechanism.

The trading team has developed highly affective trading strategies that allow them to optimise the plants in the most- effective way, ensuring market beating returns on the assets. As such the Trading team are leading experts in optimising peaking plant in the market and are also actively looking at other growth opportunities.

Job Requirements and Responsibilities:
Asset optimisation of the current peaking assets by trading power on UK Day Ahead, Intraday and Cashout markets
Generation of income through proprietary trading on UK Power Day Ahead, Intraday and Cashout markets while operating within Risk limits of the company
Daily gas procurement from the market and daily balancing of gas positions for each asset in the company's portfolio
Looking after the operational side of the asset optimisation, such as: Submitting PNs for the BM plant, starting and stopping non BM plant, submitting Bid/Offers for the BM plant, updating availabilities on the Trading System, etc
Taking active responsibility for the accuracy of daily P&L and Benchmarking reporting both for the individual and the team performance
Taking active responsibility for the awareness of the collateral use across different segments
Daily leasing with Upper Management and occasionally with stake holders of the group
Development of new trading strategies power and gas
Daily OTC deals reconciliation
Daily end of day reporting: Market update and expected P&L
Daily Risk reporting end of day on the Risk Limits compliance
Looking after accuracy of Shift log and hand over
Add hock market/performance analysis and modelling as needed
Reports write up if requested by Management
Who we are looking for:
Previous experience 1.5-5 years of trading prompt UK power with a successful proven track record
Previous experience of asset optimisation
Deep understanding of prompt power markets in UK, specifically its fundamentals
Understanding of how P&L is computed both for prop trading and asset optimisation and its components
Gas market knowledge
Understanding of statistical concepts in trading is advantageous due to sophisticated quantitative methods currently used on the desk
Ability to manage multiple work loads and perform under pressure
High attention to detail is a must
High numerical skills and ability to problem solve independently is essential
Extremely motivated and driven
Good communications skills, as job requires constant communications with operations team of the asset owners, management of Trading and the Group, other group employees and fellow colleges
Ability to listen and take direction when given by Management, ability to reflect on figures regarding personal performance
Good knowledge of Excel is essential, ability to program would be advantageous
